Cloud cost, cybersecurity, downtime, and tech debt calculators

7 calculators

Technology decisions are usually argued in qualitative terms and funded in dollars, so these calculators translate: what an hour of downtime costs, what a breach is likely to run to, what carrying technical debt takes out of a team's capacity, and how cloud providers compare on a like-for-like workload.

Industry benchmark figures behind these tools come from published research, which is dated and averaged across organisations far larger and smaller than yours. Each page names its source and year so you can weigh it properly rather than quoting an unattributed number in a business case.

Questions about tech & it calculators

Are the downtime and breach figures reliable?
They are reliable as orders of magnitude and unreliable as predictions for one specific organisation. Published averages are dominated by large enterprises and by a small number of catastrophic events, so the mean sits well above the median experience. Use the calculator to size an argument for investment, and state the source and year whenever you quote the result.
Why do cloud cost comparisons differ from my actual bill?
Because list-price compute is the smallest part of the difference. Real bills are dominated by data egress, storage class and access patterns, managed service premiums, support plans, cross-zone traffic, idle non-production environments, and the discount programs you are enrolled in. A comparison is a starting point for a conversation with a vendor, not a forecast.
