The formula

Target R-values are based on US Department of Energy recommendations for each climate zone and application. Additional R-Value = Target R-Value - Current R-Value. Estimated thickness uses approximately R-3.5 per inch for standard fiberglass batt insulation (0.28 inches per R-value point).

What is R-value?
R-value measures insulation's resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the insulating performance. It is additive, so two layers of R-13 insulation provide R-26 total. R-value depends on the material type, thickness, and density.
How do I find my climate zone?
The US Department of Energy divides the country into 8 climate zones. Zones 1-2 are hot (southern states), 3-4 are moderate (mid-Atlantic, Midwest), 5-6 are cold (northern states), and 7-8 are very cold (Alaska, northern Montana). Your local building department or energy.gov can provide your exact zone.
Can I have too much insulation?
While there is no safety issue with extra insulation, there are diminishing returns. Each additional inch provides less energy savings than the previous one. Beyond the recommended R-values, the cost of additional insulation typically exceeds the energy savings over the insulation's lifetime.
