How to use it

The formula

Total DSE = DSE/ha (by quality) x Pasture Area. Head Capacity = Total DSE / DSE per animal. DSE per animal: cattle = 9, sheep = 1, goats = 1.5. Quality ratings: excellent = 15 DSE/ha, good = 10, fair = 6, poor = 3.

What is a Dry Sheep Equivalent (DSE)?
A DSE is a standard unit used to compare the feed requirements of different livestock classes. One DSE equals the daily feed requirement of a 50kg dry (non-lactating) ewe, approximately 1kg of dry matter per day. Cattle typically rate at 8-10 DSE depending on size and condition.
How do I assess my pasture quality?
