What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from your weight and height. It was developed by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s and is used worldwide as a simple screening tool for weight categories.

BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²). For imperial units, the formula is (weight in pounds × 703) / (height in inches)².

BMI Categories

The World Health Organization classifies BMI into four main categories: Underweight (below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5-24.9), Overweight (25-29.9), and Obese (30 and above). The obese category is further divided into Class I (30-34.9), Class II (35-39.9), and Class III (40+).

These categories were established through large population studies linking BMI ranges to health outcomes, including risk of heart disease, diabetes, and mortality.

Limitations of BMI

BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. A muscular athlete may have a high BMI while being in excellent health. Conversely, a person with normal BMI but high body fat (sometimes called 'skinny fat') may face health risks that BMI doesn't capture.

BMI also doesn't account for age, gender, ethnicity, or body fat distribution. Waist circumference, body fat percentage, and waist-to-hip ratio can provide additional insights that BMI alone cannot.

When BMI Is Useful

Despite its limitations, BMI remains valuable as a quick, free, non-invasive screening tool. For the general population (not athletes or bodybuilders), BMI correlates reasonably well with body fat and health risk at the population level.

Healthcare providers use BMI as one data point among many — combined with blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, family history, and lifestyle factors — to assess overall health risk.

Questions people ask

Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not necessarily. Athletes with significant muscle mass may be classified as overweight or obese by BMI despite having low body fat. Body composition analysis (DEXA scan, skinfold measurements) provides more accurate assessment for athletes.
Should I stop using BMI?
No — just use it in context. BMI is a useful starting point and screening tool, but it shouldn't be your only health metric. Combine it with waist circumference, body fat percentage, and other health indicators.
