Why use this calculator
Knowing exactly what score you need on your final exam takes the guesswork out of exam preparation. This calculator helps you set realistic goals, prioritize your study time effectively, and reduce anxiety by giving you a clear target. Whether you are aiming for an A or just trying to pass, understanding the math behind your grade empowers better decision-making.
How to use it
Enter your current grade percentage in the course, the weight of all work completed so far (as a percentage of the total grade), your desired final course grade, and the weight of the final exam. The calculator will determine the exact score you need on the final to reach your goal and tell you whether that score is achievable.
The formula
Needed Final Grade = (Desired Grade - Current Grade x Current Weight / 100) / (Final Weight / 100). If the result exceeds 100%, the desired grade is not achievable with the given weights.
Worked examples
Current grade 85%, current weight 70%, desired grade 90%, final weight 30%
Needed = (90 - 85 x 0.70) / 0.30 = 101.67% - not achievable
Current grade 92%, current weight 70%, desired grade 90%, final weight 30%
Needed = (90 - 92 x 0.70) / 0.30 = 85.33% - achievable
When people use it
- Determining what you need on a final exam to keep your A
- Deciding whether to focus study time on a particular course
- Calculating if passing is still possible after a difficult semester
- Setting realistic grade goals before finals week
Tips
- Make sure your current weight and final weight add up to 100% for accurate results.
- If the needed grade exceeds 100%, consider adjusting your desired grade to a more realistic target.
- Check your syllabus to confirm the exact weight of your final exam versus other coursework.
Questions people ask
- What if my current weight and final weight don't add up to 100%?
- The weights should total 100% to represent your full course grade. If they don't, there may be other grade components (like participation or extra credit) not accounted for. Adjust the weights so they reflect the portions of your grade you're calculating.
- Can I use this for midterms too?
- Yes, you can use this calculator for any upcoming exam. Just enter your current grade based on work completed so far, the weight of that completed work, your desired grade, and the weight of the upcoming exam.
- What does it mean if I need over 100%?
- If the calculator shows you need more than 100% on your final, it means your desired grade is mathematically impossible to achieve with your current standing and the exam weight. You would need to lower your target grade or find other ways to earn points, such as extra credit.
