Why use this calculator
Waking up in the middle of a sleep cycle leaves you groggy and fatigued, even after plenty of sleep. Sleep naturally occurs in 90-minute cycles — timing your alarm to coincide with the end of a cycle means you wake during light sleep, feeling refreshed and alert.
How to use it
Choose whether you want to know when to wake up (given your bedtime) or when to go to bed (given your required wake time). Enter the time and the calculator gives you 3 options based on 4, 5, or 6 complete sleep cycles. Most adults function best with 5 cycles (7.5 hours).
The formula
Sleep cycle = 90 minutes. Fall-asleep time = 15 minutes after bedtime. Wake times = Bedtime + 15 mins + (90 × n) minutes, for n = 4, 5, or 6 cycles.
